Electrician

Position Summary

The Electrician will provide highly skilled electrical support for all Sonstegard Foods Company operations, including multiple layer barns, packing plant equipment, and supporting infrastructure. The role is essential to maintaining reliable facility operations, minimizing downtime, and ensuring electrical systems meet safety and compliance standards within an egg production environment.

This position will work collaboratively with maintenance crews, production teams, and management to troubleshoot, install, maintain, and repair electrical systems to support continuous, safe production of egg products.


Key Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain electrical systems across barns and processing facilities, including 12VDC to 480VAC power systems, control panels, motors, PLCs, panels, and lighting.
  • Troubleshoot issues with contactors, overloads, transfer switches, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and other control systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on electrical machinery and equipment to maximize uptime.

Installation & Support

  • Support electrical installation projects for new equipment, upgrades, and expansions, coordinating with contractors and internal teams.
  • Support barn automation systems, ventilation systems, feed systems, and plant production line electrical components.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all federal, state, and company safety standards, including lockout/tagout protocols and PPE requirements.
  • Ensure installations and repairs comply with National Electrical Code (NEC), USDA, SQF, and internal quality and safety standards.
  • Participate in safety audits, inspections, and corrections as needed.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with production, maintenance, and operations teams to minimize production disruptions due to electrical issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to maintenance staff as appropriate.

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records including work orders, inspections, parts usage, and calibration logs.
  • Document electrical changes and provide clear reporting to supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • Electrician License or equivalent combination of electrical schooling and experience.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of electrical experience in industrial or agricultural settings; poultry or egg production experience preferred.
  • Competency with motor controls, VFDs, lighting systems, PLCs, panels, and industrial wiring.
  • Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and preventative maintenance.

Physical & Other Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and comfortably climb ladders or work at heights.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in barn and plant environments.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, and emergency call-outs as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with HVAC control systems used in egg production barns
  • Familiarity with agricultural ventilation and environmental controls
  • Experience with SCADA or similar facility monitoring systems
